September 17 marks National Pet Bird Day, and while not every holiday involves confetti and cupcakes, this one is all about celebrating our feathered companions. Birds aren't just beautiful to look at—they've been bringing joy, conversation (sometimes literally), and personality into homes for thousands of years.

For Nassau County residents, it's another reminder that our communities aren't just great for people—they're also perfect for pet birds and the humans who love them.

Every August 29th, we celebrate National "According to Hoyle" Day—a holiday dedicated to playing by the rules. The phrase "According to Hoyle" comes from Edmond Hoyle, an 18th-century British writer who literally wrote the book on card games. If you've ever heard someone say, "that's not how you play!" and wished you had the rulebook handy, you can thank Hoyle for setting the standard.
