September 17 marks National Pet Bird Day, and while not every holiday involves confetti and cupcakes, this one is all about celebrating our feathered companions. Birds aren't just beautiful to look at—they've been bringing joy, conversation (sometimes literally), and personality into homes for thousands of years.
For Nassau County residents, it's another reminder that our communities aren't just great for people—they're also perfect for pet birds and the humans who love them.
It's official! National Pet Bird Day was created by the Bird Enjoyment & Advantage Koalition (yes, BEAK—it's a thing). Their mission? Celebrate the joys of bird ownership while spreading awareness about responsible care.
Not a new trend: Humans have been keeping birds as companions for over 4,000 years. The ancient Sumerians even had a word for "birdcage."
Status symbols: Alexander the Great brought parrots back from India, canaries soared into Portugal in the 1300s, and royal courts couldn't get enough of exotic birds.
Why we love them: Nearly half of bird owners say they keep birds because they're fun to watch. Bonus? They help reduce stress—and might even keep you company during your morning coffee (or Zoom calls).
Thinking about adopting, caring for, or just enjoying the company of pet birds? Nassau has plenty of independent businesses and organizations ready to help your feathered friends thrive.
Parrots of the World (Rockville Centre)
A legendary shop specializing in parrots and exotic birds. From supplies to expert advice, it's a must-visit—even if you're just browsing.
Wild Birds Unlimited (Syosset)
Perfect for backyard bird enthusiasts. They've got everything from feeders and baths to birdseed blends that make your yard a winged hotspot.
Long Island Bird & Exotics Veterinary Clinic (Great Neck)
A trusted avian and exotic pet hospital. Their specialists keep everything from parakeets to macaws in top shape.
Baldwin Animal Hospital (Baldwin)
Offering avian and exotic pet services, this local favorite helps with everything from wellness checkups to emergencies.
Healthy diet: Seeds alone don't cut it. Add pellets, fresh fruits, and veggies.
Social needs: Birds thrive on interaction. Talk, sing, and play with them daily.
Safe spaces: Offer toys, varied perches, and plenty of stimulation.
Regular checkups: An avian vet is a must—birds hide illness well.
Living in Nassau means you don't have to travel far for quality bird care, supplies, or adoption resources. Add in our local parks, preserves, and welcoming community, and it's easy to see why bird owners and their feathered companions feel right at home here.
National Pet Bird Day is more than a reason to share a cute photo of your parakeet on Instagram (though please do and tag me). It's a reminder that home is about more than square footage—it's about the joy we share with the creatures who live alongside us.
So whether you're adding a bird to your household, caring for one already, or just enjoying the wild flocks that visit your feeder, Nassau County gives you all the resources to make life a little more "tweet."
