Ampersand Appreciation & Nassau County Exploration

Every September 8th, grammar geeks, typography lovers, and pun aficionados unite to celebrate one of the most charming characters in the English language: the ampersand (&). That little squiggle has style, flair, and a history that might surprise you. Here in Nassau County, we've got plenty of creative ways to give it a standing ovation.

Whether you're a seasoned word nerd or just looking for a reason to enjoy something offbeat, National Ampersand Day is a perfect reminder that the small things (like punctuation marks) can make a big impact, just like that little detail you fell in love with in your dream home.

Let's explore a bit about the ampersand & how to celebrate it right here in Nassau County.

A Little History & a Lot of Character

The ampersand dates all the way back to the 1st century A.D. when Roman scribes began combining the Latin word et (meaning "and") into a single ligature. Over time, this stylized shorthand became more widely used, and by the 1800s, it was considered the 27th letter of the alphabet. Yes, schoolkids used to recite: "…W, X, Y, Z, and per se and."

Try saying and per se and quickly a few times. That slurred phrase is exactly where we got the word ampersand. Language is wild.

Today, the ampersand is more than just a connector, it's a symbol of partnership, inclusion, and good design. In the world of real estate, it's you & your dream home. You & your next chapter. You & a local agent who knows every corner of this county (hint: it's me).

How to Celebrate in Nassau County

Here are some delightful, creative, & slightly quirky ways to mark National Ampersand Day around our neck of the woods:

1. Shop at Places That Deserve an Ampersand

Give your business to local shops that sound like they were named just for today:

  • Pink & Honey (Roslyn Heights) – Step into this boutique for stylish finds, cozy home goods, and friendly vibes. Think modern flair with a sweet twist—the kind of place that makes you feel glad you woke up & went.

  • A Store of Fire & Dice (Lynbrook) – Pop culture meets personality in this tabletop and gaming haven where every dice roll feels epic. It's quirky, communal, & full of character, just like an ampersand should be.

  • Fern & Aurora Dessert Shop (Little Neck) – Just a short drive from Nassau, this elegant dessert boutique serves up thoughtfully crafted sweets, seasonal drinks, and a moody, minimalist vibe. It's the perfect outing when your aesthetic & your sweet tooth are both craving something special.

2. Create Art & Chaos

Get inspired by the elegant curves of the ampersand and…

  • Join a calligraphy workshop or typography class at The Art Guild of Port Washington

  • Craft your own ampersand-inspired mosaic at ClayNation in Glen Cove

  • Doodle an ampersand on every receipt, chalkboard, & sticky note you touch today — artistic license encouraged

3. Eat, Drink & Celebrate

  • Herb&Olive (Manhasset) – A Mediterranean café with thoughtful design and fresh food. Great for a smart‑casual lunch that celebrates flavor & atmosphere.

  • Pops & Poosh Caribbean Kitchen (Baldwin) – A beloved Caribbean eatery run by brothers Parnell & Wagner, with Chef Jessie Byron crafting dishes with soul. Try their famed Haitian patties or oxtail for a meal that's as rich in flavor as the ampersand is in history.

  • Oak & Vine (Sea Cliff) – A cozy neighborhood wine bar where curated bottles, small plates, and friendly vibes flow as smoothly as the pours. It's the kind of spot that reminds you why living in Nassau means community & connection are always just around the corner.

4. Do Something Unexpected (Ampersand Style)

  • Take a stroll through the Sculpture Garden at Nassau County Museum of Art—how many ampersands can you spot in nature & art?

  • Test your skills at Activate in Roosevelt Field Mall, Garden City—step into a real-life video game where you and your crew tackle glowing, high-tech challenges. It's part fitness, part fun, & totally unforgettable.

  • Start a "You & ___" photo series—like You & Your Best Coffee, You & the Boardwalk, You & That Perfect Reading Nook.

Why the Ampersand is Basically Nassau County Living

The ampersand is all about "both." It doesn't choose between—it combines. And that's exactly what living in Nassau County gives you.

  • Coastal beauty & suburban comfort

  • Local boutiques & global flavors

  • Community warmth & cultural energy

  • Peaceful neighborhoods & quick access to NYC

When you're ready for your next chapter, think of me as the ampersand between your dreams & your reality.

Happy National Ampersand Day!
