Happy U.S. Bowling League Day! Every September 3rd, we get to celebrate a pastime that's been bringing friends, families, and communities together for over a century: league bowling. And what better way to mark the day than by spotlighting some bowling history, local legends, and the fantastic alleys right here in Nassau County.
Bowling has been around for thousands of years, but 10-pin bowling as we know it today has its roots in the United States. In the 1800s, Connecticut banned nine-pin bowling due to its association with gambling. The solution? Add a tenth pin and keep rolling. The American Bowling Congress (today's USBC) was later founded in New York in 1895, setting the rules and giving rise to the organized leagues we still enjoy today.
So while your home in Nassau may not date back to the 1800s, the neighborhood spirit you'll find here is built on traditions just as enduring as the game of bowling.
Nassau County has been home to some big names in bowling:
Andy Varipapa: Known worldwide as the "greatest bowling showman," Andy lived in Hempstead, Plainview, and Huntington Bay. He wowed crowds with trick shots and helped make bowling fun and accessible to everyone.
Dave Ferraro: A Long Island native who rose through the ranks to become a Professional Bowlers Association standout. He proved that Long Islanders could compete on the national stage and win.
These local legends remind us that greatness doesn't just come from Madison Square Garden or Yankee Stadium. Sometimes, it rolls right down the lanes in Nassau County.
League night, birthday party, date night, or just an excuse to eat nachos while wearing rented shoes—Nassau County has you covered. Here are some of the top spots to roll a strike:
AMF Garden City Lanes
A Nassau favorite with dozens of lanes, lively leagues, and plenty of food and drinks. The retro-meets-modern vibe makes it as good for family outings as it is for serious bowlers sharpening their skills.
Lucky Strike Mineola
More than just bowling. Lucky Strike pairs sleek lanes with an arcade and sports bar atmosphere. Perfect for nights out with friends or a company team-building event.
Bowl 360 – New Hyde Park
A party-ready alley with music, events, and colorful lighting that keeps the energy high. It's a great place to celebrate birthdays or just break up the work week.
Maple Lanes, Rockville Centre
A family-friendly spot where kids, parents, and grandparents can all have a blast. Known for its friendly leagues and welcoming atmosphere.
Levittown Lanes
This neighborhood favorite offers 36 lanes, a sports bar, and a café. It's been a community gathering place for years and continues to thrive with leagues year-round.
Ultra Lanes Baldwin
Modernized with a family-fun vibe. Their 28 lanes, food, and lounge areas make it a solid choice for both serious bowlers and casual rollers.
Bowling alleys are more than just places to knock down pins. They're community hubs where friendships are made, kids grow up celebrating birthdays, and local traditions stay alive. When you live in Nassau County, you don't just get a house. You get built-in ways to connect with your neighbors, keep your kids entertained, and unwind after a long week.
Whether you're looking to join a league, host a party, or just sneak in a couple games on a rainy afternoon, Nassau County gives you plenty of options to do it close to home.
U.S. Bowling League Day is about more than strikes, spares, and the occasional gutter ball. It's about celebrating community, camaraderie, and the places that bring us together. Nassau County checks all the boxes—great neighborhoods, fun activities, and a lifestyle that balances tradition with modern living.
So here's to more strikes on the lanes and in life. And if you're ready to find your perfect home "strike zone" in Nassau County, I'd love to help you roll into it.
