Happy Calendar Adjustment Day!

(Yes, that's a real holiday — and no, it's not just an excuse to skip Monday's staff meeting.)

A Little History Lesson (Don't Worry, It's Short!)

Calendar Adjustment Day is celebrated every September 2nd to remember the time in 1752 when Great Britain (and its American colonies) switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. That bold move came with one small hiccup: they had to delete 11 whole days from the calendar. People went to bed on September 2nd and woke up on September 14th. Imagine explaining that to your boss: "Sorry I missed that deadline... those days literally didn't exist."

Fun fact: Some people protested, yelling "Give us back our eleven days!" The first-ever case of FOMO? Quite possibly.

Interesting Calendar Tidbits

  • Russia didn't switch calendars until after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1918, meaning the October Revolution actually happened in November.

  • George Washington technically has two birthdays: one on the Julian calendar and one on the Gregorian. Double the cake, double the fun.

  • Leap years are part of this "calendar adjustment" legacy, a clever way to keep the Earth, the sun, and our schedules in alignment (so your beach BBQ in July doesn't drift into sweater season).

How to Celebrate in Nassau County

Now you might be asking, "Okay James, but what does this have to do with living in Nassau County?" Well... nothing. BUT, here are a few timely (pun intended) ways to mark Calendar Adjustment Day right here at home:

  • Visit the Sands Point Preserve – Walk the trails and imagine what it would be like if you had 11 extra days to spend soaking up nature. (Pro tip: pack a picnic, because every day is better with snacks.)

  • Catch a Show at Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington – What better way to adjust your calendar than penciling in a night of music or theater? After all, life here is all about community and culture.

  • Sip Something Spooky at Witches Brew in West Hempstead – Fall is right around the corner, and nothing says "time adjustment" like settling into a quirky café with cobwebs on the ceiling, moody lighting, and a pumpkin-spiced potion in your hand. Perfect for conjuring up those missing 11 days.

  • Explore Old Westbury Gardens – The grounds themselves are timeless, and strolling through them is a reminder that while calendars change, beauty is constant.

  • Go Bowling at Lucky Strike in Mineola – Because if you can't add days to the calendar, at least you can add strikes to your scorecard. Plus, bowling alleys are a perfect metaphor for life in Nassau County: a little competition, a lot of fun, and always better when you bring your neighbors along.

What Day is it Anyway?

Life is busy. Calendars are messy. But when you live in Nassau County, you don't need to "adjust" much to find balance — it's all right here. Easy commutes to Manhattan, waterfront escapes, vibrant dining scenes, top-notch schools, and neighborhoods with character.

So while the Brits in 1752 were confused about what day it was, you don't have to be. If you're ready to make your next move in Nassau County, give me a call (240-397-0453). I'll help you find the perfect home — no time machine required.
