Every August 31st, we're given a guilt-free excuse to take our food, our friends, and our folding chairs outdoors—because it's National Eat Outside Day! And here in Nassau County, we have the perfect backdrop for it.
Eating outside is hardly new. From medieval feasts in castle courtyards to Victorian-era picnics with parasols, people have always loved pairing fresh air with good food. The Italians even gave us a fancy name for it—al fresco—which just sounds classier than "let's grab the cooler."
Fun fact: the very word "picnic" comes from the French pique-nique in the 1600s, meaning a casual meal where everyone contributes. Fast-forward to today, and it's not just about baskets of baguettes—it's a whole lifestyle.
Vitamin D on the side: Sunlight adds a natural boost to your meal. (Don't forget sunscreen, unless you like your lobster on your plate and on your shoulders.)
Stress melts away: Studies show dining outdoors lowers stress and boosts mood. Translation: less cranky kids and calmer adults.
Neighborhood charm: Outdoor dining and picnic spots add to the lifestyle appeal of a community—something that makes Nassau County homes extra desirable.
Bug-proof your buffet – A mesh food tent can save your potato salad from becoming a protein-packed surprise.
Stay shady – Umbrellas, trees, or a stylish wide-brim hat (yes, you'll look fabulous).
Pack smart – Freeze water bottles so they double as ice packs until you're ready to drink them.
Scout your spot – A little planning ensures you've got picnic tables, bathrooms nearby, and maybe even a view.
Louie's (Port Washington) – Waterfront views, seafood, and sunsets that'll make you forget you have dishes at home.
Butler's Flat & Clam Shack (Port Washington) – Dockside seafood in a super casual, salt-air setting—where "dress code" means flip flops are welcome.
Dirty Taco + Tequila (Port Washington) – Funky, flavorful tacos with outdoor seating that's as vibrant as the food.
Gatsby's Landing (Roslyn) – Elegant outdoor patio dining with a nod to Long Island's literary legacy.
Sands Point Preserve (Port Washington) – Historic mansion grounds, rolling lawns, and sweeping Sound views.
Eisenhower Park (East Meadow) – With miles of green space, picnic areas, and playgrounds, it's the king of county parks.
North Hempstead Beach Park (Port Washington) – Picnic tables right by the water, plus walking paths to stroll off your meal.
Planting Fields Arboretum (Oyster Bay) – Stately trees, gardens, and plenty of quiet nooks to spread a blanket.
Living here means you're not just buying a home—you're buying into a lifestyle where backyard barbecues meet waterfront fine dining. From casual picnics to candlelit patios, Nassau makes it easy to celebrate National Eat Outside Day not just once a year, but every sunny weekend.
So whether you're planning a picnic basket masterpiece or booking a table by the marina, take a bite out of life outside. And if you're looking for a new backyard to host next summer's barbecue? Well, I know just the person who can help you find it.
