Think being a "nerd" is an insult? Think again. National Find Your Inner Nerd Day (founded in 2022 by Your Nerdy Best Friend, Beth Z on the anniversary of the first use of the hashtag #FindYourInnerNerd) is all about celebrating the things that make you uniquely passionate. Whether you geek out over comics, coding, planes, or pop culture, this holiday is your permission slip to let that flag fly.
And the best part? If you're in Nassau County, you don't need to look far to unleash your inner nerd in the real world.
Here's a trivia nugget you can pull out at your next trivia night:
The word "nerd" first popped up in Dr. Seuss's 1950 book If I Ran the Zoo.
By the early '50s, it became slang for someone square, stiff, or socially awkward.
Fast forward to today, and being a nerd is a badge of honor, synonymous with expertise, passion, and enthusiasm.
So if you've ever stayed up way too late binge-reading fantasy novels, memorizing plane models, or arguing about who the best Star Wars character really is… congrats, you're in the club.
The "nerd face" emoji joined keyboards in 2015.
Happy Days and Saturday Night Live both helped make the word mainstream in the late 1970s.
Nerds and geeks aren't the same! A geek started as a carnival oddball, while a nerd's roots are more academic.
Now you've got some trivia ammo to use while you're out celebrating.
Looking for the perfect place to spend August 23rd? Here are four spots where nerds thrive on Long Island:
Comics, collectibles, graphic novels... this place is legendary. With over 120,000 comics in stock, you can get lost in superhero lore or pick up the perfect trade paperback for your collection.
Calling all aviation buffs: sit in real cockpits, explore space exhibits, and step into Long Island's rich aviation history. Add the planetarium to your list—it's a nerd's dream date night.
All aboard! Explore historic locomotives, vintage rail cars, and the golden age of American train travel. A paradise for train nerds young and old.
For the history and military nerds: climb inside tanks, explore WWII armor, and step into immersive exhibits that bring history to life. It's a hands-on adventure where history buffs feel right at home.
Share your passion, whatever it is, on social media with #FindYourInnerNerdDay. (Bonus points if you tag me: @ReAgentJamesParks)
Grab a friend and plan a nerdy field trip to one of Nassau's hidden gems.
Dust off that board game, telescope, or collector's edition comic book—it's your day to revel in it.
Here's the thing: National Find Your Inner Nerd Day isn't just about trivia, comics, or tech it's about giving yourself permission to love what you love without apology.
So on August 23rd, lean into it. Because when you embrace your inner nerd, you're not just celebrating a holiday you're celebrating you.
