Step Back in Time at These Historic Homes on Long Island | Laffey Real Estate

Long Island has a rich and fascinating history, filled with famous names, local legends, and historic places, each with its own stories to tell. Whether you love local history, historic architecture, or strolling scenic grounds on a sunny summer day, this is a great time of year to step back in time by visiting some of the wonderful historic homes on Long Island. Our real estate agents have more on five historic homes around Long Island for you to discover.

  • Sagtikos Manor – 677 W. Montauk Highway, Bay Shore, NY 11706
An elegant manor home and estate built up over more than 300 years, Sagtikos Manor is certainly one of the oldest homes on Long Island. Original records date the home to 1697, when it would serve as the Long Island retreat of New York's first American-born mayor. It later served as a country home for the Thompson-Gardiner family, a dairy farm for the community, and a gathering place for events. Today, it's a county park, museum, and great place for a tour. It also remains a popular place for events, including the Antique & Classic Car Show, which takes place every July.

  • Van Nostrand-Starkins House – 221 Main St., Roslyn, NY 11576
One notable aspect of the Van Nostrand-Starkins House is that, despite its centuries-long history, it remained continuously inhabited until the 1970s. The first portion of the home is believed to have been constructed around 1680, at a location that today is around the corner from Roslyn homes for sale. The home underwent extensive changes in both the 1700s and 1800s, long before restoration efforts closer to the present day. In the 1970s, the Roslyn Landmark Society restored the Van Nostrand-Starkins House, which serves today as a house museum open to the public.

  • Sagamore Hill National Historic Site – 20 Sagamore Hill Road, Oyster Bay, NY 11771
Known as "The Summer White House," Sagamore Hill served as the home of Theodore Roosevelt. Located near Oyster Bay homes for sale, the Roosevelt home is open via guided tour only. Tickets are $15 for adults, $1 for children, and $7.50 for seniors. Leave some time to explore the park grounds of this historic site, open from sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

  • Sands-Willets House – 336 Port Washington Blvd., Port Washington, NY 11050
The Sands-Willets House is home to the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society, offering a variety of historic homes and structures for you to explore. Visit to see the Dutch barn, which was built around 1690, the historic Thomas Dodge homestead, and the Sands-Willets House itself, all located close to Port Washington homes for sale. Tours are available in the spring and summer, as well as around the winter holidays.

  • Brewster House – 18 Runs Road, East Setauket, NY 11733
The Brewster House is the oldest historic home on our list, and you'll find it near Stony Brook homes for sale. It was built in 1665 and was home to six generations of the Brewster family. This home even served as a tavern and general store during the Revolutionary War, with complicated family loyalties during that time.
