Enjoy Autumn Leaves: Drives and Walks on Long Island | Laffey Real Estate

During fall months, Long Island explodes into a kaleidoscope of colors. Our real estate agents love to spend time leaf-peeping by car or foot at these great locations around Long Island.

  • Montauk Scenic Highway
Revive the nostalgic tradition of Sunday afternoon family drives with an outing along the Montauk Scenic Highway. Officially designated as State Route 27, the highway extends nearly 30 miles along the southern shore of Long Island, ending at the historic Montauk Lighthouse. Points of interest featuring fall foliage include Hill Street and Sagg Swamp Nature Preserve.

  • Nassau County Museum of Art - 1 Museum Drive, Roslyn Harbor, NY 11576
Explore natural and man-made works of beauty at the Nassau County Museum of Art, just down the street from Roslyn Harbor homes for sale. The 145-acre property includes a magnificent arboretum with magnolia trees, willow oaks, and 30 other species of trees. In addition, nine marked trails of various lengths and degrees of difficulty wind throughout the grounds. Be sure to pick up a map showing installations comprising the Sculpture Garden, which features more than 40 works by 30 artists. There's no fee to tour the arboretum, trails, and garden, open daily from 9 a.m. - to dusk.

  • State Bike Route 25
Bicycles are eco-friendly and low-cost vehicles for leaf-peeping that provide greater off-road access. State Bike Route 25 originates not far from Smithtown homes for sale and ends at Orient Point in the North Fork for a total length of 67 miles. The route, which is designed to use existing roads with wide shoulders and minimal traffic, passes beautiful scenery along the north edge of Long Island. Take in different sights going the other direction on State Bike Route 25A, which runs 18 miles from Smithtown to the area near Cold Spring Harbor.

  • Planting Fields - 1395 Planting Fields Rd., Oyster Bay, NY 11771
Immerse yourself in fall colors and local history with a visit to Planting Fields, a few short minutes from Oyster Bay homes for sale. Planting Fields, a 409-acre estate dating back to the early 1900s, is named for the land's agricultural fertility. The landscape was designed by the famed Olmsted Brothers, sons of Frederick Law Olmstead, designer of Central Park. Features include more than a dozen formal gardens along with two greenhouses filled with orchids, camellias, and other plants. Five miles of woodland trails provide a full palette of fall colors. Park hours are 9 a.m. -5 p.m. daily There's no admission fee to tour the grounds, but parking is $8 per car.

  • Old Westbury Gardens - 71 Old Westbury Road, Old Westbury, NY 11568
Old Westbury Gardens, less than a 10-minute drive from Westbury homes for sale, is a majestic display of early 20th-century architecture and landscaping. Its many recognitions include a listing on the National Register of Historic Places and a spot among the top three public gardens in the world, as named by Four Seasons Hotels Magazine. The 200-acre estate has been featured in dozens of movies and TV shows, including North by Northwest and The Gilded Age, while the grounds and gardens remain largely as they were when the manor house served as the home for the Phipps family. Old Westbury Gardens is open 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. every day but Tuesday through October 31. Admission is $8-$15, and tickets must be purchased in advance.

A beautifully landscaped yard adds curb appeal that can boost your home's value. Contact us for other useful tips on buying and selling a home.
