October
21

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.  Laffey Real Estate stands with the country to encourage schools, communities and organizations to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying. The goal is end to hatred and racism by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of all forms of bullying on all children and adults of all ages.  Show your support with your Orange!!

Bullying doesn't only happen in the classroom.  It is a social issue with many different guises.  In particular, the rise of online or cyberbullying is becoming more prevalent.  The National Center for Education Statistics, a research center with the U.S. Education Department states that "twenty percent of students between the ages of 12 and 18 were bullied during the 2016-2017 school year."  While The Washington Post found that "Among those students who faced bullying, 15 percent said they were bullied online or by text, a 3.5 percentage point jump from the 2014-2015 school year."  Even more disturbing, the study found that, "In 2017, of students ages 12–18 who reported being bullied, about 41 percent reported that they thought the bullying would happen again."

Talk to children about the ways to diffuse aggression and resolve volatile situations.  Recognize and understand how this type of harassment affects children.  It is vitally important to determine what kinds of interventions are necessary.  Encourage dialogues and start with these five ideas.

  1. Teach them safe, kind ways to intervene
  2. Have them comfort the child being bullied
  3. Tell them to report the bullying incident
  4. Practice empathy at home
  5. Let your child know that you support them unconditionally

For more details on how to put an end to bullying and protecting your children, visit www.StompOutBullying.org.  Get involved in your school and community.
